A noisy refrigerator is extremely annoying. If the refrigerator in your home is a little louder than normal there are some easy things that you can look at while trying to find a solution. There are several fans on a home refrigerator that often create strange noises. The appliance could also not be balanced too. Or you might have a compressor that is wearing down. If your refrigerator is much louder when the ice maker is operating, the noises could be from a broken a water valve.

There are some basic things that must be be checked. Like is the refrigerator too full? A refrigerator that’s too can sometimes cause glass containers and other food items to clink and clank together. This will cause a lot of loud sounds inside of the refrigerator that isn’t ideal because the refrigerator is on and naturally creating a minor vibration.

If you own a refrigerator that has a built-in water dispenser or ice maker but do not have the water connected, be positive you shut off the dispenser and ice maker. There is usually a button on the water dispenser that can be used to shut off the dispenser. And with the ice maker, you simply need to pull up the metal bar inside of it. If the refrigerator is installed near a wall, it could cause the normal running noise to seem a lot louder. This is because of the echo of the noise of the machine. Pull it out a bit from the kitchen wall and then see if that helps at all or not. A refrigerator needs to be about 2 inches from the rear wall to lower the sound.

If it is not one of these basic and easier fixes, it’s time to explore the issue further. The majority of the time, the fans are the reason for a loud refrigerator. There are fan blades that can get dirty and clogged. Sometimes the fan motors do as well. There is a condenser fan and an evaporator on refrigerators too. Sometimes the condenser fan gets a coating of dust on it and needs to be cleaned often. If the dust builds up and gets too heavy it might wear out the bearings inside the fan’s motor.

Clean the Fan & Refrigerator Condenser Coils

First, the refrigerator. A lot of the time you will need to have a screwdriver or wrench to remove the back panel. As soon as it’s off you’ll see a fan behind it. If it’s covered in dirt and dust, find a rag and gently wipe it off. While you’re in there check the coils too. These are typically near there and will be full of the same grime and dust that the fan is. Cleaning the coils will only take a couple of minutes but it will help the refrigerator run efficiently. This is a common problem that causes a refrigerator to run non-stop.

Turn the fan blades. Do the fan blades spin easily? If they do not it means the fan motor bearings are not working. This is an easy fix, as the fan assembly is typically a unit that can be purchased online and can be replaced by just disconnecting it. However, before you do this, ensure the refrigerator is not plugged in. Do this same process for the evaporator fan, which is typically located behind the freezer. This is not usually the issue, as this fan is concealed by being inside the walls of the refrigerator. But, when the sounds are coming from the top of the appliance that’s the area to check.

If it’s possible it could be the compressor, the large, usually gray or black object beneath the refrigerator near the coils, we suggest calling Champion Deltona Appliance Repair. That isn’t a repair a homeowner should proceed with.
